Make sure that you are legal to wed before the big day
You’re planning the wedding of the century and you may even have it all figured out – the dress, the music, the food, the cake, the colors…
But have you made sure you are legal to wed? Obviously, this is a hugely important part of it all and you should definitely see if everything is in legality when it comes to your big day. Here are some of the essentials to keep in mind:
First and foremost, know that most states practice slightly different laws when it comes to weddings and marriages. The age, the requirements, the officiant types – they can all differ even from one US state to another (not to mention anything outside of the United States!).
Furthermore, know that you will need a legally recognized officiant. This may be a justice of peace, a county clerk or a judge, or it may be a religious officiant (such as a minister or a rabbi, for example). Do make sure your officiant has the right to do this!
You will also need to make sure you have two witnesses. The role can be played by just about everyone (including your photographer and florist, if you are eloping). Still, the traditional way to do this is by allowing either your Maid of Honor and Best Man to sign the wedding certificate OR by tasking close friends or relatives with this. It’s your choice, really!
